On March 3, the award-winning Christian duo for KING + COUNTRY led worship at Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, California. After performing several of their songs, including “Fix My Eyes” and “Joy,” brothers Joel Smallbone and Luke Smallbone spoke with Pastor Greg Laurie about their upcoming film, “Unsung Hero.”

That evening, Harvest hosted a special screening of the movie, which releases April 26 from Lionsgate. “Unsung Hero” portrays the Smallbone family’s immigration to America and the struggles they endured. The film is “full of faith and miracles,” according to Joel Smallbone, who said it’s a tribute to their parents and a way to “rise up [and] call our mom blessed.”

‘Unsung Hero’ Portrays the Power of Family’

As they led worship Sunday, the Luke and Joel Smallbone said Harvest feels like their “California home church” because they’ve been visiting since 2012. While speaking to Laurie during the service, the brothers emphasized that “Unsung Hero” portrays the power of faith and family.

In the movie, Joel Smallbone plays his father, David Smallbone, a concert promoter in Australia who’d lost everything. In 1991, David and Helen (his pregnant wife), moved with their six children to Nashville, Tennessee, for a job that soon fell through. The film, based on for KING + COUNTRY’s song of the same name, highlights how “Helen’s faith stands against all odds and inspires her husband and children to hold onto theirs.”

Laurie described “Unsung Hero” as a heartwarming, family-oriented, faith-filled film that will inspire viewers. When he asked about the purpose of the movie, Luke replied, “I believe in the power of family. I believe family is more important today than it ever has been in the history of the world. But I’m not quite sure we value it as such.”

The “thesis statement” of “Unsung Hero,” Luke added, comes from this quote by Mother Teresa: “If you want to change the world, go home and love your family.”

The Smallbone Family Fought for One Another

The release date for “Unsung Hero” also happens to be David and Helen Smallbone’s 49th wedding anniversary. Joel, who said he’s proclaiming April 26 “Family Day,” urged people to head to the theaters that weekend. “Films have about 72 hours to show the world whether they’re viable or not,” he told Laurie, whose ministry was portrayed in the movie “Jesus Revolution.”
