Abraham Piper Publicly Deconstructed His Faith
Piper grew up in a conservative Christian home with his parents, John Piper and Noël (Henry) Piper, and four siblings. He, along with his entire family, attended Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where his father pastored.
However, Piper’s upbringing brought him a great deal of tension as he questioned the validity of Scripture and the behavior of Christ-followers. After he formally rejected the Christian faith, Piper was excommunicated from the church when he was 19 years old. He returned to the faith a few years later before deconstructing from his faith again.
In a TikTok video last year, Piper specifically questioned conservative Christians who are choosing to have children and raise a family.
With significant resentment over the evangelical lifestyle and approach to raising a family, Piper reflected,
While other kids are learning to read with comics or whatever normal parents have around the house, here fundie kids are…six, seven, eight years old devouring stories of Jezebel being defenestrated and then eaten by dogs, or Judas’ bowels bursting out, or Noah’s sons laughing at him when he was passed out drunk and naked, or Lot’s daughters who got him drunk and [expletive] him so they could have babies.
Piper concluded, “And those are just a few highlights off the top of my head decades later.”
Piper has posted hundreds of TikTok videos—on topics including garbage disposals, thrift shops, and conservative Christianity—all while deconstructing his faith.
In an attempt to connect with others who are going through the same process, Piper said, “Hey, if you’re deconstructing, good for you.”
“There are a lot of serious thinkers out there that can help you navigate this stuff,” he continued, “but if you just want to roll your eyes at how [expletive] weird it all was, that’s what I’m here for. Stick around if you want to.”
